Summer Skirt Rework

A repurposed skirt is given new life.

OVERVIEW

The Summer Skirt was a too big hand-me-down with optimum redesign potential.

Rather than discard the skirt, the piece was reworked into a transitional two piece set to be worn together or as separates.

The ethical design increases the item’s life span and provides a sustainable solution to an otherwise unwearable garment for the owner.

The original skirt was too large with an unflattering length for the owner’s height.

The owner was drawn to the textile of the skirt and was intent on rediscovering a new silhouette for the garment.

Hemming the skirt to the desirable length produced a yard of waste.

In an effort to be most sustainable, the waste was repurposed into a transformational top.

The redesign sketches aided in determining proportion, silhouette and patterning in order to achieve the best yield from the scrap material.

The top provides added versatility
depending on how it is tied behind the neck.

The top is secured with three rows of bra hooks and a tie at the back of the neck.

The skirt was taken in at the waist with two box pleats at the front to retain the skirt’s volume and add movement.

The redesign preserves the summer essence of the textile, serving as the perfect selection for a beachside dinner.

Now come along for the process.
